This is another test image for the story I’ve been working on.  Hopefully something will come of it soon.

This is part of a JtMM story that I’ve been playing with.  If all goes well, you’ll see it posted in the next couple of weeks.  Let me know what you think so far.

Behind the scenes, I have been spending a lot of time trying to get my illustration business off the ground.  It hasn’t been as easy as I had hoped, but it makes every gain all the more rewarding.

There was an interesting article by Bob Thompson in the Washington Post this weekend about the history the graphic novel.  For those that read graphic novels, there probably isn’t anything you haven’t already seen or heard in there, but I thought it was interesting that the Post dedicated a four page article with illustrations by Jonathan Bennett to the subject.

Recently, I’ve been messing around with these kids book drawings.  I don’t know if I’ll ever do anything with them, but they’ve been fun to play with.  Let me know what you think.

If you’ve ever been caught thinking about shapes, it’s a very embarrassing experience, especially if you’ve forgotten everything from your days in geometry class.  Lets hope that no one reading is thinking about shapes as a result of this post.  And if you are….  SHAME ON YOU!  They have rights too, and don’t need you ogling for their affection.

I am happy to report that I have been spending more time doodling in my sketchbook.  I hope this trend continues.

Kenneth Lavallee – a very comic-y feel to his work, and full of humor.

Doug Boehm – a great collection of commercial grade images. A lot of down right gorgeous stuff.

Yoko Furusho – there is a haunted feel to all the pieces, with a bit of playfulness. Good stuff.

There are currently a lot of crickets in my back yard, but I know that as the whether turns colder, they will try to enter my domain.  There is almost nothing worse than to encounter a cricket (especially the spider cricket variety) first thing in the morning.  I don’t know what that has to do with the image above, but it just got me thinking.  I generally feel a little bit of guilt when I kill a bug, but not the spider cricket.  He is my mortal enemy.

Andrew Gordon – I love the mysterious feeling I get when looking at his paintings.  So spooky.

Michael Kirkham – The crisp nature of his work and the limited color palette make for some snazzy picture making.

Mike Dutton – He captures the sense of light wonderfully, and his framing of elements is spot on.  A lot of great stuff to linger over.

These are some of the sketches I did for the Deer Crossing update on my comic site.  When I am sketching, I rarely work on what the final product will look like.  Instead, I work on elements of the drawing that I think will be difficult to render, or elements that I’m not quite sure about.  With Deer Crossing, I had a lot of things to work on.  Cars are always a difficult thing for me to draw for some reason, so I decided that I would render it as “bubbly” as possible, that way it would be easier to reproduce through a number of panels.

Sorry for the lack of Blog updates last week.  My schedule kind of got screwed up, but I should be back on track now.  Well, at LEAST for now.

Here is the final illustration for the home page of the Mt. Moriah Studios site.  I will probably post it there within the week.  I’m fairly happy with the result.  Let me know what you think.
